The first long-term European military presence in Australia was established with the arrival of the British Royal Navy as part of the First Fleet in 1788. Marines were stationed at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island from 1788 to 1792.
This group of marines was created with the help of volunteers from the Royal Navy to provide soldiers capable of fighting at sea and on land and assisting in naval operations. Workers in Australia are registered within three years of arriving in the country.
